When I was looking for a pack, I needed a bag that could store a variety of different items for different purposes. Primarily, I needed a bag I could easily carry daily to work that would hold work supplies, medical supplies, and food. After having one too many cans of pop explode in my normal backpack, I decided it was time to upgrade and get something better suited for my needs. This is where the Condor 3 Day Assault Pack comes into play.
-For every day "normal" use (see: not packed to capacity), I find this bag to be perfectly sized. It is slightly more bulky than a normal sized backpack (which would hold approximately 1,500 cubic inches, or half of the capacity of this bag). This is due to the fact that the compartments expand as necessary to fit what you're carrying. Not carrying a lot? It'll be bulkier than a normal backpack, but still manageable. All the while, you have room to carry more if need be.
-This pack takes comfort to another level. With multiple pick up "handles" in different locations, it's easy to move the bag short distances no matter your approach angle. In addition, the adjustable "straps" for carrying the bag are padded and thick, making them extremely comfortable when wearing the pack. If carrying heavy loads, the removable belt support helps immensely in alleviating the burden. Finally, the foam pad back panel keeps the bag from focusing all the weight in one spot on your back. This also serves the purpose of keeping the bag from deforming and poking you when carrying oddly shaped items.
-Drainage and drying of the pack is simple due to small grommetted holes in the bottom of the compartments. Ever have a pop suddenly explode or leak? Drainage and cleaning becomes much easier due to this simple feature. This is also extremely valuable if you carry a water bladder, as it may rupture, leaving your gear soaked and uncomfortable. The faster things dry, the better.
-Organization becomes a breeze with this bag, due to the multiple compartments that have internal webbing and slots. This makes holding things like medical supplies a breeze, and allows for quicker access and less mix ups. Being a diabetic and also defense minded, I carry multiple different medical supplies for different situations (ranging from low blood sugar to gun shot wounds). This bag has made getting to whatever I need quick and simple. The MOLLE webbing expands upon this purpose, making it possible to add additional storage capability as needed.
-When it comes to durability, I have to give this bag top notch ratings. Everything on it is made to last. I could see this bag lasting multiple tours of duty for a soldier and still being viable later on.
All in all, it's hard to go over absolutely everything this bag offers. But if you're looking for a durable backpack / bag that can hold a lot of stuff for many different purposes, you're definitely looking in the right spot assuming you can deal with the extra bulkiness.
I have taken this bags on plenty miles of hiking, and I have taken it to Colorado springs up to an 11,500 ft peak and several small hikes. With my height at 5' 6" the bag wasn't too bad for me and didn't feel too bulky. I mean it's not big rucksack like an ILBE pack. It would have been a little bulky for some serious bouldering.
The criticisms I had for this bag: Holes for the camelback tube to go through require some break in. Threads tend to come out in the holes and get in the way every time I would put the tube through them. What is the purpose of the center hole. It's too far away from the shoulder straps, and it doesn't open enough to get anything through it. I kept a large sheathed knife in one of the magazine pouches and the threading came undone on the bottom of that pouch. It was most likely my fault considering the pouches were designed to hold spare magazines and not a large knife, but I was expecting it to be a little tougher.
For those looking for a Bug out Bag: I could see the bag being good for short periods of time during the winter or for use in the summer. For extended periods in the winter, where one has to carry a winter sleeping bag and some shelter, the bag in not versatile enough to carry a big sleeping bag and enough clothing and supplies for a long time. One can do what I've done and put the winter gear in a sack and tie it to the bottom of the bag, but I must say it is cumbersome both in size and in trying to repack the gear. In winter I would prefer a large rucksack to carry winter supplies and a small day pack when hiking around. This pack would be okay in summer as there is no need to carry large winter gear around.
In summary, after almost a year of use, I can say that the bag is tough, versatile, not too bulky but more than some people might prefer, and fairly comfortable to carry. Condor did a good job with this bag.
Top reviews from other countries
but from all my first impressions I love it and think it's worthy of the 5 stars I gave it. My review consists of me testing this backpack to see how much I can fit inside it and how it feels.
Zippers on the large pocket go all the way down so you can really get in there and stuff it down. There are buckled straps and mesh zippered pockets inside this large pocket, so if you like to be organized and not just throw everything in, you have that option. This pocket is absolutely massive and I use it to store my 2kg winter sleeping bag in it's compression sack + camping pillow, and there's a bit to squeeze in a t shirt or two and a few other small items. I use the zippered mesh pockets to store a case for my toothbrush and other toiletries.
The middle pocket has shaped pockets to store documents/maps, and pockets for tools like pencils/pens, firesteel, bbq lighter. There's a bit of extra storage room in here too.
The front top pocket is small and thin. I would use it to store a large knife or a small camping grill like the Blaze Bushcraft Grill.
The front bottom pocket is pretty large, however the mesh pockets in this part are kinda small.
The two side pockets are also pretty large, and can easily fit a medium few t-shirts, a towel, or a water bottle, I used one of these pockets store my 240z Stanley Camp cookset, a small dishcloth and a dish sponge. Probably could fit a bit more in there too.
It's amazing how much you can fit in this backpack with room to spare.
Was second guessing the color choice (olive drab over black or coyote brown) but when it arrived it looked fantastic and I have no regrets.
So, I filled this backpack so it weighed about 20lbs total. I am a pretty small man weighin 140lbs. At this weight, with the outside straps all buckled including the waist strap, it felt comfortable and steady on my back.
It did stick out about 1 foot from my back, since I stuffed it to near capacity, and I'm short and skinny, so it looks a bit funny that the backpack is massive and but I don't mind that at all. Also, maybe in walking long distances the weight distribution might be a little weird but I'll update the review when I get a chance go camping and test it out in the spring.
