What is a Bug Out Bag? [+ Free Checklist PDF]

A bug out bag is basically a kit that contains everything you need in order to survive on your own for at least 72 hours. The number 72 comes from the fact that we as humans cannot survive for longer than 72 hours without water.

Defining Bug Out Bag

According to Wikipedia,

“a bug out bag is a portable kit that contains the items one would require to survive for seventy-two hours when evacuating from a disaster. The focus is on evacuation, rather than how to survive long-term, distinguishing the bug-out bag from a survival kit, a boating or aviation emergency kit, or a fixed-site disaster supplies kit.” Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bug-out_bag

Other names for such a bag are a BOB, 72-hour kit, grab bag, battle box, a Personal Emergency Relocation Kit (PERK), go bag, or a GOOD bag (Get Out Of Dodge). Regardless of what you choose to call it, they all serve the same purpose to aid in your evacuation from a disaster area and provide for short-term survival.

Prepare Your Bug Out Bag in Advance

Bug out bags (BOBs) are prepared in advance of any event that would require its use and are readily accessible in case a disaster strikes. Because we never know where we’ll be when a disaster occurs, it is crucial to have a bug out bag that is easily and quickly accessible in times of emergency. Some experienced preppers keep one at home, in their vehicle and also at their place of work.

A “done for you” bug out bag is certainly better than nothing, and there are companies that provide such a product complete with all the components they deem necessary.  Some of you who are more ambitious may want to build your own bug out bag. Determining what is needed and then assembling a bug out bag, however, I’ve discovered is quite the daunting task.
